Big and Me by David Miller

(Ford St Publishing) HC RRP $ 26.95

Mental illness is the hardest thing for many people to understand and more so for children. This book is a wonderful concept for helping children understand how grown-ups or older children act when they suffer any type of mental illness. It also teaches adults how children perceive those actions; how they feel, how easily they misinterpret them and how afraid they become when what they see as normal transforms into something scary. This book should be used as a tool for and with discussion about unpredictable behaviour. I feel this versatile tool could be used to explain other areas of unusual behaviour that stem from illness that isn’t easily corrected, illness that demands patience and understanding.

The story is narrated by Small. Big and Small are machines that spend a lot of time together. But sometimes Big becomes ‘wobbly’ and needs to take his ‘tractor medicine’ each day to help him. At times Big’s world looks ‘grey and dull’ and he doesn’t know why. Small calls the Mechanic when Big is like this. Her tools fix Big up.

But, there are times when Big feels better. He stops taking his medicine but, he becomes aggressive and Small has to ‘get out of the way’. The whole text is made up of metaphors like these so that children can understand or have it explained to them. The text covers how the mind works, why it doesn’t work properly at times, and that help is always available to the sufferer, and to friends and family. It explains why someone will cry, lose control, and function differently to how they normally would.

It accents the fact that a sufferer of mental illness is not alone, but that there are others just like him; that it’s nobody’s fault they are this way. It also draws attention to the fact that people should be able to talk about how they are feeling and seek help freely and without fear of being ridiculed; that medication can stabilise the condition and allow the sufferer to live a normal life.

I read this with my bright, five year-old tester, and we discussed the pages one by one in full. I questioned what he thought the book was about, and what the narrative/dialogue meant. He did question a few things, and we discussed it further. I was comfortable that he fully understood the concept. Some children will need more guidance and explanation than others.

The full-page colour illustrations are photographed, 3D paper sculptures, using vibrant, earthy shades. The characters are shaped by strong angular lines and curves and will appeal greatly to young audience. All correspond uniformly with the text. Well done and highly recommended.

Two Weeks in Grade Six by Mary Pershall

I thought this book was really good especially for grade six kids.

It is about a girl who is in grade six and is struggling because she only has one friend, her best friend, and she is starting to leave her out. She doesn't want to tell her mum because she is too embarrassed. She is also finding it hard because there is a big trivia day at school coming up and she is scared no one is going to want to be her partner. Will anyone choose her or will she be forced to do it alone?

it is quite a sad book because no one wants to be left out and it really teaches you to be nice to other people because she is writing about what is is like to be left out and have no friends to talk to and play with. So I give it a 10 out of 10.

Avalon web of magic: Circles in the Stream by Rachel roberts

This the book that inspired me to read the Quest for magic and web of magic! Aka to the people who don't no when the others are coming out, someone from a freewebs.com made a avalon fansite, and snatched this little peice of info:

'Avalon: Web of Magic' is part of our new youth line of novels, and the first volume of it and The Pirate & The Princess are currently being sold through Scholastic Book Fairs. 'Avalon: Web of Magic' novel 1 and 2 will receive a wide release (i.e. bookstores and online sites) in March 2008 with The Pirate & The Princess novel 1 and 2 following in April 2008.

Please note that our new youth line of novels are being kept separate from our manga line as the intended age group skews younger. For this reason, we will not be listing any of these new youth reader books at Gomanga.com. We do have plans, however, to launch a new web site for this new line of books at a later date.

Also, regarding the Avalon movie...

Production for the Avalon animated movie is commencing on Jan 1, 2008 by Film Roman/Starz Media. Starz Media is also working on an Avalon web site, which will launch sometime in early 2008.

1. Alanna series: About a girl who wants to become a knight so ad that she dresses like a guy to become one!

2. Immortal series: A girl named Daine who had Wild magic in her (meaning she can talk/bond to animals) Series about her mastering her magic, finding out who her father is, and saving Tortall from Carthak

3. Protector of the Small series: About Keladry of Mindelan who is the first girl to "try" to become a knight (without disguising herself). She has to prove that she is more than capable of being a knight.

Milly Molly Mandy by Joyce Lankester Brisley

Even though it's more of a little kids' book, I really enjoyed reading it. The language is a bit older and it's interesting to see how people wrote/spoke back then. It's a really simple, nice, easy read.

Free Styl by Raewyn Caisley

The book 'Free Style' is about a girl named Kate. She loves swimming. Her family likes different things rather than swimming though. Her Dad loves to play soccer but hates swimming.

Kate likes to swim by herself but soon, she joins a group.

After a few weeks of training, Kate gets chosen by her teacher, Mr Gilmore, to participate in a competition!!!

It was the day of the competition!!! Would Kate win or lose?

Read the book to find out.....

I would recommend this book for those who are 8 years to 14 years of age.

I think that Raewyn Caisley is a great writer because she has a great plot.

Avalon: book 1-11 by Rachel Roberts

Avalon is an amazing series, that all girls would like. I hope they make it into animation, soon. I have all the books in the series, and like the other girl, started in third grade. Avalon is a tale of three friends who learn of magic, friendship and Trying new things out. They are totally diferent from eachother at first, but go on so many adventures, that they become great friends. Some adventures include romance, discover, near death, and meeting up with all sorts of things, such as demons and banshees! It may be cute at some points, but these are not lalala pretty unicorn books. Just thought I'd warn you ;)... By the way, I'm 11.
