I've just finished The Road, Cormac McCarthy's Pulitzer Prize winning novel. I'll have to sit down and review it for Reader's Corner Reviews but I'll post some of my thoughts here.
Intriguing and bleak novel. A father and son trek south along "the road" in post-apocalyptic America where it's every person for his or herself.
Even the structure of the novel is sparse as there is no punctuation. Occasionally I had to re-read some passages to ascertain who was speaking in the dialogue.
I'm not sure that you can say with a novel such as The Road that you enjoyed it, however it had me hooked.
Worth a read!

| Hey webgurl, I read The Road last year. It is one of those books that you will never forget! Very moving story and beautifully written - not one unnecessary word used. I loved it too. |

We read 'The Road' for our BookGroup and I found it compelling but also dark and sparse.
It was hard to read such a bleak novel with a grim story... at times it left me feeling bereft but the language McCarthy uses is sublime.
However... I found it interesting that the author would use such complex language and words when the story is about a man who struggles to maintain his grip on his own world - the one in his head, heart and the one around him.
The dialogue is sparse and not very illuminating which contrasts with the rich, poetic language used by McCarthy.
Our BookGroup were divided about the ending - whether it ended with a spark of hope or if it were as hopeless as their trek??
What do others think?I felt there was a moment of hope... _________________ "Remember: Y'all is singular. All y'all is plural. All y'all's is plural possessive."

I agree with you, I thought it ended with some hope, although for the human race in general it was still a bleak existence.

Bit worried that the Wife is going to play too big a role because they've got Charlize Theron playing her.
Should be a good movie tho'
